Powering commercial and private shipping with clean hydrogen

Commercial shipping is irreplaceable for global trade. With 90 percent of the world trade in goods, it is at the heart of globalization and prosperity. However, shipping causes around one billion tons of CO2 annually, equal to almost 3 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. If international shipping were a country, it would rank sixth among the top emitters of CO2. In addition, there is private shipping, which with luxury yachts represents a much smaller proportion of global CO2 emissions, but which is arguably dispensable from an ecological point of view.

In order to stop global warming and climate change, commercial and private shipping must find ways to do without fossil fuels.

H2-Enterprises has technologies for production, storage and conversion of clean hydrogen into electrical or thermal energy that can already be used in large-scale industrial projects. Large quantities of clean hydrogen can already be produced without CO2 emissions (Waste-to-Hydrogen), transported safely and inexpensively to any location and used there, among other things, for the CO2-emission free production of electrical energy (LOHC).

From 2025, H2-Enterprises Group will also offer this technology – in cooperation with the shipbuilding industry – as a complete system solution eRELEASE for shipping. Commercial and private ships can then switch their energy supply completely to hydrogen and become independent of fossil fuels. For this purpose, the clean hydrogen produced by H2-Enterprises is stored in the carrier medium LOHC (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier), delivered to the existing ship fueling stations and from there refueled by the ships – just like today’s fossil fuel. The carrier medium LOHC can be safely stored in conventional tanks at ambient conditions on the ship. The clean hydrogen bound in the LOHC is then released via eRELEASE systems located in the ship´s engine room and converted into up to 48kW of electrical power per eRELEASE unit – as required and of course modularly scalable. The discharged LOHC is simply exchanged for charged LOHC at the next refueling. With eRELEASE systems from H2-Industries, commercial and private ships can be operated fully electrically and thus become CO2-emission-free and independent of suppliers of fossil fuels – an ecologically and economically trend-setting solution.
